Seven different movies opening wide this holiday weekend. This is what people in Hershey, Pennsylvania would call a "clusterfudge."
August Rush: (Watch the trailer) A remarkable young orphan uses the power of music to find his parents and... good lord, look at that picture up there! Put a pair of big pretentious sunglasses on Robin Williams and he becomes Bono! I knew they looked alike, but good gravy, it's uncanny!
Enchanted: (Watch the trailer) Amy Adams and James Marsden play fairy-tale Disney characters mystically transported to modern-day society. It could be a shrewdly funny twist on classic animation conventions, or it could be Fat Albert.
Hitman: (Watch the trailer) Timothy Olyphant as a uber-assassin, based on a popular, bloody violent video game. Such delightful holiday fare!
Stephen King's The Mist: This one's definitely worth checking out - creepy and unsettling with a disturbing performance from Marcia Gay Harden. Check out my review.
This Christmas: This family dramedy starring Delroy Lindo, Regina King and Loretta Devine violates the "No Xmas Before Thanksgiving" rule that every mall does. I steadfastly maintain that no one should mention Xmas until December 1. Then jingle all the way to your heart's content.
No Country for Old Men: You're going to be hearing about this for a while. The Coen brothers' latest effort is firing on all cylinders and is generating Oscar buzz for everybody. It's finally expanding nationwide, so don't waste time. Put down that sandwich and go see it. It's mandatory.
