It seems the Keira Knightley period drama Atonement is suddenly the Oscar favorite, picking up 7 Golden Globe nominations to lead the pack. Eastern Promises made a surprising showing, and Cate Blanchett, while a shoe-in for Best Supporting with I'm Not There, was also not expected to show up in the Best Actress category with the widely-panned Elizabeth: The Golden Age. It's rare to see that double-up, much less twice in the same year, but Philip Seymour Hoffman also pulled off the two-fer, nominated in Best Actor and Best Supporting for The Savages and Charlie Wilson's War, respectively, and the Supporting categories don't even have the luxury of being broken up into Drama and Comedy/Musical, so that's even more impressive, even if The Savages is only debatably a comedy, and Laura Linney should be in there somewhere.
Other notable snubs include Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin for No Country for Old Men, both of whom really carried that film to its Best Motion Picture nomination, and Into the Wild being nominated only in musical categories, although it's a tip of the hat to Eddie Vedder. Sorry about your luck, Emile Hirsch.
