Director Darren Aronofsky has described his film, the unrelentingly bleak Requiem for a Dream, as "a roller coaster ride into a wall," and he apologized to his audience at the Toronto Film Festival when he debuted the film in 2000. Normally, when someone apologizes for a movie, it's because they've created something as awful as Batman and Robin. In this case, Aronofsky created the absolute worst-case scenario for four people whose lives have been invaded and destroyed by drug addiction. The slow disintegration of the lives of Ellen Burstyn, Jennifer Connelly, Jared Leto and Marlon Wayans (the best thing he's ever done and likely ever will do) serves as a punch to the soul, with the crushing climax will haunt you every time you hear some action-adventure trailer reusing Clint Mansell's music for lesser purpose.

A lot of movies have been made that center around drug use, but this is the best one there is. This film is an experience everyone should have at least once. Just make sure you have some friends to talk to once it fades to black and leaves you in its darkness.
