News: Michael Cera Makes a Scott Pilgrimage

Indie cuddly-pants awkward boy extraordinaire Michael Cera may be taking on a particular character that is right up his alley, the cuddly indie comic awkwardish boy Scott Pilgrim in Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, to be directed by Edgar Wright, director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

His role in Juno will have trained him well for the wanna-be musician who has to fight seven levels of evil ex-boyfriends before he can get with the enigmatic girl of his dreams. The book swerves back and forth between touching personal (dare one say 'emo') drama and ridiculously bombastic video-game style death-matches, complete with 1UPs and power boosts. You know, for kids!

It could make for an interesting and fun movie, although the comic-shop guy I talked to summed it up by saying "it's not as clever as it thinks it is." I read the first book and agreed, although I'm told by the series' fans that it gets better. Check it out yourself. Give indie comics some love.
