News: Norton's Hulk Hullabaloo

Edward Norton in Incredible Hulk

This is a disheartening sign. Apparently Edward Norton, starring as Bruce Banner in this June's Incredible Hulk, is clashing editorially with Marvel Studios about the final cut of the film. The last thing this relaunch of the franchise needs is creative difficulties.

I can ostensibly see what the central issue likely is. To speculate wildly, Marvel is leery about anything remotely 'downbeat' after their experience with Ang Lee's moody Hulk that was coolly received, while Norton is likely pushing for dramatic choices that conflict with that.

People are already worried that they haven't seen anything but a few stills from the film (until this week, when the first trailer debuts), but that's entirely understandable. Hulk is the kind of film where you can't really show anything that people will be interested in until most of the post-production CG work is complete, so it's late in the game by necessity. The unrevealing teaser was done by Lee, and they can't go the same route again. It's especially important now that they're also including the Abomination (Tim Roth), who's a whole new giant green monster in need of rendering.

It's also rumored to have a cross-over scene with Jon Favreau's Iron Man film, which looks like nothing but awesome so far, and will be opening a month earlier. Hopefully, Iron Man's fortunes can lift the Hulk past his problems and into the glory he deserves.
