Mel Gibson hasn't starred in a movie since 2002, thanks to two giant directorial projects (The Passion of the Christ [watch the trailer] and Apocalypto [watch the trailer]) and one giant drunken racial slur scandal (Jews are responsible for all wars). But Casino Royale [watch the trailer] director Martin Campbell has taken the risk of casting him in Edge of Darkness, a feature film adaptation of the BBC miniseries he also directed. Gibson will be playing a straight-laced cop who uncovers deep-seated corruption while investigating the murder of his activist daughter.
Lest you think Gibson hasn't even been offered any acting roles with the stink of his DUI scandal, he's actually simply not been accepting them, although he has come close. One would imagine he'd have to find the exact right vehicle to hop into on the road to public image recovery. Something classy, dramatic and understated. A remake of a BBC miniseries that originally starred Joe Don Baker, to be written by The Departed [watch the trailer] scribe William Monahan, seems to have hit the spot.
