Bryan Singer's Valkyrie, starring Tom Cruise as a Nazi colonel who spearheaded a coup attempt against Adolf Hitler, had been pushed back from this June to October for more shooting to be done, and now it's been bumped back to President's Day weekend, 2009. The reason given is to capitalize on a lucrative weekend, rather than any need for further production delay.
I know it's Bryan Singer, so I should have some faith, but this trailer is just jarring. There is no attempt at even approximating German accents or language at all. Tom Cruise is using the same fast food, slick-assed, Persian bazaar manner with which he seems to handle everything else, and I'm not buying him for a second as a Nazi. It's got a great cast and a great director, though, so it remains to be seen if they can overcome that Kevin Costner Robin Hood accent syndrome.
UPDATE: Slate confirms my fears that there may be something dreadfully wrong with this movie. They apparently experimented with accents but abandoned them likely because not everybody could pull them off. But that's not the only thing wrong for a film that started shooting last September and hasn't finished production yet.
