In the "inexplicable sequels" category comes news that there's a sequel to Donnie Darko [watch the trailer] in the works. Anyone who has actually seen the film has to wonder why exactly anyone thinks this is a good idea.
The first thing that comes to mind is that director Richard Kelly's last effort, the fascinating mess Southland Tales, was a bit of a disaster, so he might be going back to what worked for him to try and find his feet again - but no, Kelly is not involved with the project. Chris Fisher will be directing and Daveigh Chase will be returning as Samantha, little sister to Jake Gyllenhaal's Donnie, now seven years older. They've also snagged Briana Evigan of Step Up 2 The Streets as well, so it actually could turn out to be Donnie Darko 2: Electric Boogaloo. The title right now, though is S. Darko, and not the expected Sammie Darko.
The original film is a complete full circle story with nothing left to expound on. The only reason this is being made is due to the name recognition of the original. Usually, that's not that big of a problem - anyone can see a reason for Chicken Little 2: That There Sky Might Just Be Fallin' Again - but rarely does anyone try to make a sequel to a movie as self-contained as Donnie Darko.
Make sure your seatbelts are securely fastened folks. This looks like turbulence.
