BBC Films has given some more thespian cred to Ellen Page, hiring her on to play Charlotte Bronte's classic character Jane Eyre, a British icon. Page has never done a period piece before, and after seeing Juno and Smart People, where it felt as if she was playing the same character with a few swapped traits, I had some doubts as to her range.
Jane Eyre is an 1847 Victorian novel, an epic tale of love about a governess and her master, Edward Rochester, and has been made into films and television shows over a dozen times already. The Britons really love this thing.
This one, however, may be strikingly different, depending on how Moira Buffini's screenplay turns out to be. She's a playwright associated with the "in-yer-face theatre" movement which, according to Wikipedia, "intends to involve and affect the audience by presenting vulgar, shocking, and confrontational material on the stage." It's possible this could be a very new take on the story.
