News: Speed Racer's Books Cooked?

Speed Racer

So there's a little mud in Warner Bros. eye, as it turns out the $250-300 million they spent to produce and market Speed Racer may have been a slightly more costly flop than original estimates trumpeted. This is leading some folks to believe WB might've tried to hide the fact that the film actually finished in third place behind the $20.2 million What Happens In Vegas, with only $18.6 million. Then again, it's not unheard of for a studio to tout an inflated estimate right off the bat while waiting the few days for the actual numbers, especially when it's a dud.

Of course, it's likely Iron Man took most of Speed Racer's audience, more than doubling the take of the #2 and #3 movies combined with $51.2 million. It's also likely that audiences are still angry about how bad the two Matrix sequels were, and didn't want to go see the Wachowski Brothers spectacle.

The Wachowski bros certainly put a lot of effort into making Speed Racer... the movie overall looked and felt like a cross between anime, a kaleidoscope, that Flintstones movie, a video game and the Dukes of Hazard
