News: Spider-Man 4 and 5 Back to Back?

Spider-Man 3

Interesting news from Cinematical: apparently Zodiac scribe James Vanderbilt has turned in a script for Spider-Man 4, but the arc is long enough for two films, which means Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5 could be shot simultaneously.

Spider-Man 3 got more flack than it deserved, and chances are the core cast and crew won't come back for two more movies, since everybody (especially Kirsten Dunst) tends to make "I'm Done" noises after each one. That's not necessarily a bad thing - the more one thinks about Iron Man, the more one might come to realize that there's something essential missing from the Spider-Man series: comedy. There's no way Iron Man should be funnier and more quick-witted than Spider-Man, but it's unlikely Tobey Maguire can ever really get to the point where he can compete with Robert Downey Jr.'s copious snark. So if Sam Raimi needs to cast anew (provided he returns, which is a big if), maybe he can move in that direction. The time for emo Spidey has passed. Time for Marvel's Resident Quipster Spidey.

Although Zodiac is not exactly a zinger-filled film, even if it does show that Vanderbilt can write supervillainy. But he also wrote The Rundown, so we know the man can do goofy.
