News: Brokeback Opera?

Brokeback Mountain

The New York City Opera has commissioned an opera to be written based on Annie Proulx's short story Brokeback Mountain which, of course, was the basis for Ang Lee's Oscar-winning film of the same name. The opera is set to bow in 2013.

There's no telling how much of that movie will make it to the opera, since it's based on the short story and not the film that starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as cowboys who couldn't quit each other, but it's likely it'll keep pretty close to the tale more people are familiar with. The big question is where they're going to work in the fat lady that has to sing by the end of it.
