The arranged marriage is a seldom splendored thing. No matter how much confusion, pain and sorrow can come from the search for someone to love, it is always preferable than having that person chosen for you. The age-old tale of repressed desire and the loss of freedom again finds form in Sarah Gavron's debut feature film Brick Lane, based on the best-selling novel by Monica Ali.
Nazneen (Tannishtha Chatterjee) is a woman in Bangladesh who loves her country and does not wish to leave, but finds she must once her father has chosen her husband for her - a man named Chanu (Satish Kaushik) who lives in London. Torn apart from her beloved sister Hasina (Zafreen) and finding that she does not love this man with whom she must remain, Nanzeen finds herself profoundly unhappy despite her best efforts. This leads to the inevitable affair with her neighbor Karim (Christopher Simpson), and an awakening of radical ambitions beyond what the men in her life would have planned for her.
