Writer/director Tamara Jenkins resurfaced last year with her Oscar-nominated project The Savages, but before that, she made a splash almost a decade earlier with The Slums of Beverly Hills, a critically-acclaimed semi-autobiographical dramedy about a poor family struggling to exist on the fringes of the highfalutin zip code. Vivian Abramowitz (Natasha Lyonne) is fed up with her nomadic existence resulting from the fact that her father Murray (Alan Arkin) keeps moving her and her brothers (David Krumholtz, Eli Marienthal) every few months in the effort to remain in the right area to send his kids to the good schools. When Vivian's cousin Rita (Marisa Tomei) moves into their one-bedroom place after a stint in rehab, she becomes something of a role model for the frustrated girl as she deals with her sudden physical maturation. Check it out. It's funny.
