You might remember The Chronicles of Riddick as the definition of the word "turgid," but there's a good reason that movie was made, and it's called Pitch Black, a tense sci-fi action/horror film from director David Twohy.
Riddick (Vin Diesel) is a dangerous criminal being transported on a cargo ship when it crash-lands onto a desert planet. He promptly escapes from the wreckage, but soon learns that there's a serious threat to not only his own life, but those of the few survivors of the crash - pilot Carolyn Fry (Radha Mitchell), bounty hunter William Johns (Cole Hauser), teenage runaway Jack (Rhiana Griffith), antiques dealer Paris Ogilve (Lewis Fitz-Gerald), a Muslim Imam (Keith David) and settlers Zeke and Shazza (John Moore and Claudia Black). It seems this planet is engulfed in darkness every 22 years, and they've shown up at just the right time to experience some true night terrors in the form of flesh-eating "bioraptors." It's a good thing that Riddick can see in the dark.
