You might not have noticed this in the wake of The Dark Knight, but Mamma Mia!'s $27.6 million opening weekend made it the highest opening ever for a musical, edging out last year's Hairspray at $27.4 million. This seems a little crazy, considering Hollywood's long history of musicals, but such is the effect of inflation - not to mention the fact that big musical hits like Moulin Rouge and Dreamgirls all had platforming releases rather than big splashy premieres.
