Never mind that orangutans are actually apes and not monkeys (apes don't have tails, monkeys do, you see), and never mind the irony of a movie about a five-star hotel giving luxury accommodations and pampering to an ape while, in reality, once Hollywood primates stop being cute, they are generally ignored, forgotten and treated poorly. Thankfully, this article can let us breathe a little easier about Dunston Checks In, because the ape in question is currently living in a nice sanctuary and doing okay. Therefore, we can revel in the yuks provided by his cinematic hijinks.
Rupert Everett plays Lord Rutledge, a master criminal who has trained his pet orangutan Dunston to be his partner in jewel thievery. He happens to check into a fancy hotel called The Majestic, which is owned by Mrs. Dubrow (Faye Dunaway) and run by frazzled and overworked Robert Grant (Jason Alexander with fake hair), and since the place is bucking for the new six-star rating, Grant treats Rutledge and his ape like royalty. Of course, Dunston gets up to some, ahem, "monkey business" of his own, including befriending Robert's son Kyle and eventually necessitating the arrival of an overeager animal control guy (Paul Ruebens).
