The fight between Harvey Weinstein and Scott Rudin over Stephen Daldry's The Reader, which is the last film credit for producers Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella, has seemingly been won by Weinstein, as Rudin has not only left the production but has also removed his name from the film.
Rudin wanted to push back the release until 2009 to give Daldry more post-production time and so he wouldn't have to compete against himself in the Oscar races this year, but Weinstein was adamant that the film meet its promised 2008 release date, and so it apparently shall. The fight is ugly, lawyers are involved, and both of them think they have their late colleagues on their side.
Fitting tribute to the memories of two great filmmakers, guys. Really.
